Today is my 25th birthday! Yes, I am a New Year’s Eve baby! No, my parents were not trying to get me in for a tax break (that joke has never been funny).

I’ve learned in my 25 years that a New Year’s birthday isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s expensive. It’s close to Christmas. Everyone is busy. Places are closed or packed. No one really cares it’s your birthday when it’s shared with a holiday. I struggle with trying to make my birthday special (as I think all birthdays should be).

So to help, I try to do what I want, and not what everyone else wants. And you know what that means? I haven’t stayed up until Midnight on New Year’s in YEARS. Why? Because I hate staying up late and love sleeping, so why would I do something I hate on my birthday? It’s my birthday and I will celebrate how I please.

I know I’ve put a negative spin on things in this post so I think I should say there are some positives to my birthday. I never have had to go to school or work on my birthday or the day after. Also, I enjoy starting off a new year of life with a new calendar year. Things sync up so that is kind of cool! I spend a whole calendar year one age which is pretty cool!

This year, my husband planned a night in Des Moines for the two of us and we are going to go shopping, have an early dinner at a nice restaurant and most likely head back to the hotel early. And that sounds pretty good to me!

Since 25 is a milestone birthday I did want to reflect on my 25 years. I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel across the country and the world. I worked my butt off for an engineering degree and was hired at the company I dreamed of working at since I was a teenager. I married my best friend and had the most beautiful wedding. We bought a house that I absolutely adore in a city that feels like home. Most of theses things happened in the last five years, so I know that 25 is only the beginning. I have a full life left to live and am so glad I’ve been blessed this much at 25.

Happy new year friends. Here’s to being a quarter of a century old!

Thanks for catching up!

  1. Happy Birthday Claire! I was born on Friday the 13th and lets just say my dad was asked to leave the room because he kept telling my mom to hold off on having me. He was very scared about the possibility of the “bad luck” associated with a Friday the 13th Bday. So you should totally take the End of Year celebration and run with it! 🙂 Can’t wait to read about your birthday celebrations with your husband!
